WHY ARE ALL AI ASSISTANTS FEMALE ?

 Customers want their digital assistants to sound like women, therefore  companies assert that they can optimize profits by designing feminine-sounding voice assistants. However, there are a multitude of conflicting findings within the field.  As a result, many AI voice assistant developers tend to turn to a feminine voice as a matter of convenience. 

                       

Some reasons why voices in AI are female coded- 

1.Stereotypes and social conditioning: Historically, women have been associated with caring roles such as mothers, teachers, and nurses. As a result, people tend to perceive female voices as more nurturing, empathetic, and helpful. These traits make them more suitable for voice assistants, which are designed to assist and help users.

2.Market research: Companies that develop AI voice assistants conduct extensive market research to determine the preferences of their target audience. Studies have shown that people tend to prefer female voices for voice assistants, especially in certain cultures such as the United States.

3.Technical limitations: When AI voice assistants were first developed, they used text-to-speech technology, which was not as advanced as it is today. Female voices were easier to synthesize because they have a higher pitch and are more natural-sounding.

           

It's important to know that not all AI voice assistants use female-coded voices. Some devices allow users to choose from a variety of voices, including male, female, and even non-binary options. The trend toward more diverse voice options reflects a growing awareness of the importance of representation and inclusivity in technology.
